Jade from Myanmar has passed through Tengchong for centuries, and the old town of 和顺 grew rich on that trade. The best-known local snack is 大救驾, stir-fried rice cake.

In 1944 Chinese troops retook Tengchong from Japanese forces after a siege that levelled the old walled town. The soldiers who died lie in the 国殇墓园 cemetery.
