history

Joined the Red Army in 1930 and took part in the Long March. After 1949 he served as ambassador to Sweden, Pakistan, Albania, and Burma before returning to senior military and government roles. The only non-PLA-uniformed Defense Minister of the PRC (1981–82). His memoirs are valued for their candid accounts of the Long March and early PRC diplomacy.
