索耶

Most strongly associated with Tom Sawyer, hero of Mark Twain's 1876 novel 汤姆·索耶历险记 (Tāngmǔ Suǒyē Lìxiǎn Jì). The original English surname means 'one who saws wood.' Also widely used as a generic English-surname transliteration in TV subtitles (e.g. James 'Sawyer' Ford in Lost / 迷失).

An older transliteration uses 索亚 (Suǒyà) — you'll see both in book titles. CC-CEDICT lists 汤姆索亚历险记; modern editions tend to print 索耶.
