1978–2020 · 运动员 athlete

American basketball player who spent all 20 of his NBA seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and won five titles. Hugely popular in China, he was killed in a helicopter crash; his 曼巴精神 ("Mamba mentality") is still quoted.

His parents named him after Kobe beef, seen on a restaurant menu. Chinese calls the Japanese city and its beef 神户, but the player 科比, by sound. Fans quote him for 凌晨四点的洛杉矶, 'Los Angeles at 4 a.m.', shorthand for training before dawn.
