白鲟 (Psephurus gladius, "Chinese paddlefish") was the largest freshwater fish in China — adults reached up to 7 meters. Once nicknamed
中国淡水鱼之王 ("king of Chinese freshwater fish"), it was driven extinct by Yangtze damming and overfishing. In 2019 a study formally declared it extinct sometime between 2005-2010, and the IUCN confirmed the listing in 2022. The name appears frequently in Chinese conservation reporting.
