班底 originally meant the non-leading actors of a
戏班 (traditional opera troupe) — the supporting players who held the show together. By extension it now means 'core team / key personnel' for any group: a film's creative team (
导演班底), a company's leadership (
管理班底), or a politician's inner circle (
执政班底).
