猴儿 is northern/Beijing colloquial for
猴子. Used affectionately for kids (
小猴儿) much the way English calls a wriggly toddler 'a little monkey.' An older, dated reading hóu'ér ('little devil') treats the
儿 as a full syllable; modern speech almost always uses the rhotacized hóur.
