纸钱), paper effigies, paper houses, or a corpse. The
化 ('transform') captures the belief that burning sends the offering across to ancestors in the spirit world. For ordinary 'burn down,' use
烧 or
烧毁; for 'cremate,' the technical term is
火化 (huǒhuà).
