Mostly used in 混淆 (hùnxiáo, to confuse, blur). 混淆是非 (hùnxiáoshìfēi) means deliberately blurring right and wrong; 混淆视听 (hùnxiáoshìtīng) means misleading public opinion.
The right side is read yáo (cooked dishes) and serves as the sound element, here giving xiáo. Mixed-up food also fits the sense of things jumbled together.
