正燮

俞正燮 Yu Zhengxie (1775-1840) was an Anhui-born Qing scholar known for unusually progressive views on women - his essays defended widow remarriage and criticized footbinding centuries before such ideas became mainstream. The name pairs 正 ('upright') with 燮 ('to harmonize'), an auspicious classical combination.

The character 燮 ('to harmonize') is rare and often misread. Don't confuse it with 变 ('to change') - they look superficially similar but the bottom of 燮 is 又, while 变 ends in 夂.
