Songjiang is older than Shanghai itself — known as the 'root of Shanghai' (
上海之根 Shànghǎi zhī gēn) because the prefecture predates the modern city by centuries. The Sheshan (
佘山) hill there hosts a famous Catholic basilica and an astronomical observatory.
