A white, crystalline sweetener about as sweet as sugar, used in sugar-free sweets and in baking. Many sugar-free chewing gums sold in China are sweetened with it.
木糖 (xylose, lit. 'wood sugar', first isolated from birch bark) + 醇 (-ol, the chemistry suffix for alcohols). The same 醇 ending shows up in 乙醇 (ethanol) and 甲醇 (methanol).
