Left component - 方 originally pictured a banner on a pole, the standard carried by a marching unit. As radical it indexes 旅 (a travelling group), 旁 (side), 旗 (flag), 族 (clan) - characters tied to banners, sides, and tribal columns. The banner image is exactly right for 旅 'travel': a group on the move under one standard.

Right side - modern shape resembles 氏 'clan' but historically pictured stylised people walking under the banner. Standalone 氏 has 4 strokes; here it absorbs the two marcher-heads above for 6, locking in the picture of a banner-led travelling unit - an army, brigade, or party of travellers.
