A keyword of late-Qing and Republican-era political writing, when reformers and revolutionaries argued China was on the verge of being colonized or destroyed. Often pairs with ('seek survival') as 救亡图存.

Heavy and historical. Modern usage is almost exclusively about 20th-century Chinese history; you wouldn't apply it to, say, saving a struggling business.
