扎伊尔 (Zaire) was the country's name from 1971 to 1997 under Mobutu Sese Seko, who renamed it as part of his 'authenticity' (Africanization) campaign. After his fall in 1997, it reverted to
刚果民主共和国 (Democratic Republic of the Congo). The name 'Zaire' itself comes from a Kongo word for the Congo River.
