history

Full name 总理各国事务衙门 ('Office for the General Management of Affairs Concerning All Foreign Countries'). Set up after the Second Opium War in 1861, it was China's first dedicated foreign-affairs body and a flagship of the 自强运动 (Self-Strengthening Movement). Replaced in 1901 by the modern 外务部 (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
