总参谋长

长 here is read zhǎng (3rd tone, 'chief / head'), not cháng (2nd tone, 'long'). Same character, two readings: zhǎng = 'leader' (校长 'principal,' 厂长 'factory director,' 总参谋长 'chief of staff'); cháng = 'long' (长城 'Great Wall,' 长跑 'long-distance running'). Misreading the tone here would change 'Chief of Staff' into nonsense ('long staff officer').

In China, the 中国人民解放军总参谋长 historically held one of the most powerful uniformed posts in the PLA. After the 2015 PLA reforms, the role was transferred from the General Staff Department (总参谋部) to the new Joint Staff Department (联合参谋部) under the Central Military Commission, and the modern title is 联合参谋部参谋长.
