His courtesy name was 文潜. With 黄庭坚, 秦观 and 晁补之 he was one of the 苏门四学士, the younger writers 苏轼 promoted, and he was demoted and exiled with his patron. He outlived the other three, and his plain poems often describe the lives of working people.
