Tips

history
It grew up around Yiyang in Jiangxi at the end of the Yuan. One actor sings while a chorus offstage takes up the line (帮腔), backed only by gongs and drums, with no strings or wind. It spread across China and fathered the loud 高腔 styles of many regional operas; as a living tradition it survives mainly in 赣剧.
mistakes
弋 is an arrow tied to a cord. It lacks the left-falling stroke of 戈 'dagger-axe', so do not read the name Gēyáng.
