Tips

history
Both men studied under 鬼谷子. Out of jealousy Pang had Sun Bin's kneecaps removed, and Sun Bin escaped to 齐. Qi beat Wei at 桂陵 and again at 马陵, where, the 史记 says, Sun Bin wrote on a tree 庞涓死于此树之下, 'Pang Juan dies beneath this tree'. When Pang lit a torch to read it, the Qi archers shot, and he killed himself.
culture
Their rivalry gave the stratagem 围魏救赵, 'besiege Wei to save Zhao', and the trick of leaving fewer cooking fires each day so that Pang would think the Qi army was deserting.
