history
In December 1978 the farmers signed a secret pact with red thumbprints: each family would farm its own plot, and if their leaders went to jail the others would raise their children. The next harvest was several times bigger, the experiment was endorsed, and household farming (包产到户) spread across China. The pact is now in the National Museum of China.
