history

In imperial China, 学士 was a prestigious court title — the 大学士 (Grand Secretary) was essentially the prime minister. The Hanlin Academy (翰林院) scholars were called 翰林学士. The modern meaning of 'bachelor's degree' is a completely different usage borrowed from Western academic systems.
