Tips

history
Founded by Nakayama Miki (, 1798-1887), who claimed possession by a deity named 天理 (Tenri-Ō-no-Mikoto). One of the largest Japanese new religions, with several million adherents and the entire city of 天理 (Tenri-shi) built around its headquarters.
mistakes
Don't confuse with the early-19th-century Chinese 天理教 rebellion (1813), an offshoot of the White Lotus that briefly stormed the Forbidden City. The Japanese Tenrikyo and the Chinese sect share a name but are unrelated.
