A feature of older Chinese apartment blocks (1980s–90s 单元楼): a vertical chute running down the building so each floor could drop trash directly to a ground-floor collection point. Most have been bricked up because of smell, fires, and pests, replaced by floor-level 垃圾分类 (garbage-sorting) stations.
