China's 国家安全部 (Ministry of State Security, MSS) was founded in 1983 by merging the intelligence arm of the Ministry of Public Security (公安部) with the CCP's investigation department. Roughly equivalent in scope to the US CIA + FBI counter-intelligence. Don't confuse with 公安部 (Ministry of Public Security) which handles regular policing.
