Echoes Tang-dynasty scholar Li Ao's 《李文权文集·陵庙日时朔祭议》: 先儒穿凿，各伸己见 — earlier scholars each pushed their own views. 抒 (to express, literally 'to draw out') replaced 伸 over time to give the modern form.
