Originally a Beijing-opera term:
压 means 'press down' and
轴 was the wooden roller at the bottom of the program scroll, which held the heaviest, best act. Strictly the
压轴戏 was the second-to-last piece (the very last was
大轴 or
大轴戏), but in modern usage it just means 'the main event' or 'grand finale'.
