President of South Korea from 2003 to 2008, a self-taught human-rights lawyer from a poor farming family. The 2013 film 辩护人 (The Attorney) tells of his lawyer years. He took his own life in 2009 during a bribery inquiry.

He was jokingly called 傻瓜卢武铉, 'Fool Roh', for repeatedly giving up safe seats to fight regionalism. In October 2007 he and his wife walked across the military line into North Korea for a summit in Pyongyang.
