history

The first complete skullcap was found on 2 December 1929 by 裴文中. The original fossils vanished in 1941 while being shipped out of Beijing to keep them from the Japanese army and have never been found, so research today relies on casts. The site, 周口店, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

usage

Also called 北京人, which more often just means 'a Beijinger'. Scientists write 北京直立人, Homo erectus pekinensis.
