Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with artist Ai Weiwei (艾未未) and engineer Li Xinggang (李兴钢). Its lattice steelwork earned the nickname 鸟巢 (Niǎocháo, 'Bird's Nest'). It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of both the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Winter Olympics — the only stadium ever to do so.
