Tips

usage
青天 'clear blue sky' was a folk word for an upright official who clears away injustice, so the name means roughly 'Bao, the clear sky'. He is the same man as 包拯 and 包公, and praising a fair modern official as a 包青天 is still common.
culture
The legend grew in Yuan plays and Qing novels, where he tries cases at 开封府 with three guillotines: dragon-headed for royals, tiger-headed for officials and dog-headed for commoners. The theme song of the 1993 series opens 开封有个包青天 'In Kaifeng there is a Bao Qingtian'.
