history

诸葛亮 is said to have built a road of timber galleries through the cliffs here, hence the name "sword pavilion"; the gap itself is 剑门关. Li Bai's 《蜀道难》 says 剑阁峥嵘而崔嵬, "Jiange towers lofty and steep", where one man can hold the pass against ten thousand.
