Tips

history
Beijing's 内城 was the Ming capital's main wall, built around the Imperial City and the Forbidden City. Its nine gates ran from 正阳门 at the front to 德胜门 in the north. The 外城 was added to the south in 1553. Under the Qing, bannermen lived in the Inner City and Han Chinese in the Outer City. Most of the walls came down in the 1950s and 1960s, and subway Line 2 now follows the course of the old Inner City wall.
