墨子 (5th century BC) set
兼爱 against the Confucian love graded by closeness: if everyone cared for others as for their own, wars of conquest would stop. Hence the paired slogan
兼爱 非攻, 'universal love, no aggression'.
孟子 attacked it as denying one's own father.
