Modern phylogeny calls them 合弓纲 (Synapsida) rather than 爬行动物 — they are not true reptiles but the sister group that gave rise to mammals. 似哺乳爬行动物 survives as older textbook terminology, literally 'mammal-resembling reptiles'.
