The name transliterates Mongolian Ereen ('mottled', referring to the multicolored salt lake nearby). Erenhot is China's main land border crossing into Mongolia and a key stop on the Trans-Mongolian Railway. The surrounding Gobi has yielded enough dinosaur fossils to earn it the nickname 'Dinosaur Town' — giant sculptures of two kissing dinosaurs straddle the highway into the city.
