The opening left-falling
丿 sweep on top is the indexing Kangxi radical for
乏. Traditionally read as an arrow-deflecting shield placed in front of
之 to reverse its forward motion, the
丿 thus pictures the blockage that gives
乏 its 'lack, deficient' meaning.
