Short for 中国石油. With 中石化 (Sinopec) and 中海油 (CNOOC, which drills offshore) it is one of the three state oil majors. It grew out of the northern oilfields such as 大庆, and its filling stations are commonest in the north and west, while 中石化 leads in the south and east.
