上首 is a formal/literary term for the seat of honor in traditional seating etiquette — usually the seat facing the door, or on the host's left. Contrast with
下首 (lower seat). In everyday speech most people say
上座 instead;
上首 is more common in period fiction and banquet protocol writing.
