The district is 万华区. The older name of the area, 艋舺, comes from a Ketagalan word for a canoe; under Japanese rule it was rewritten with characters read Manka in Japanese, which gave today's 万华.

龙山寺 (Longshan Temple), founded in 1738, is one of the best-known temples in Taiwan, and busy night markets surround it.
