Tips

history
Unknown to science until 1901 when British explorer Harry Johnston sent a hide to London; previously Europeans dismissed local Mbuti reports as legend. The Chinese name 霍加狓 is a phonetic approximation of 'okapi'. The animal is now the emblem of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's wildlife institute.
