A staple image of classical Chinese poetry. Meng Haoran's (
孟浩然) 《
春晓》: "
夜来风雨声,
花落知多少" ("Last night I heard the wind and rain — how many blossoms have fallen?") is the line every Chinese child memorizes in elementary school. The compound is built like other simple sound-words:
风声 wind's sound,
钟声 bell's sound,
笑声 sound of laughter.
