A staple image of classical Chinese poetry.
孟浩然's
《春晓》:
夜来风雨声,花落知多少 ("Last night I heard the wind and rain - how many blossoms have fallen?") is the line every Chinese child memorizes in elementary school. The compound is built like other simple sound-words:
风声 wind's sound,
钟声 bell's sound,
笑声 sound of laughter.
