A Later Zhou general, his troops draped him in a yellow robe at
陈桥 (Chenqiao) in 960, forcing him to accept the throne — the
陈桥兵变. He famously neutralized the threat of future military coups at the
杯酒释兵权 ('releasing generals' military power over wine') banquet, pensioning off his senior commanders rather than purging them. Set the Song dynasty's civilian-over-military tone.
