Founded by Liu Bang (刘邦) in 206 BC with capital at Chang'an (长安, modern Xi'an) — 'Western' distinguishes it from the later Eastern Han at Luoyang. Interrupted in 9 AD when Wang Mang usurped the throne and founded the brief Xin dynasty.
