When you see
菊池 in Chinese, it's almost always rendering Japanese 'Kikuchi' (
菊池). The Kikuchi clan was a powerful medieval warrior family in Kyushu; the city of Kikuchi in Kumamoto Prefecture is named after them. In Japanese the same characters mean 'chrysanthemum pond'.
