Top grass radical (Kangxi #140 compressed) — the indexing radical, but here a graphic substitute. The traditional 榮 had 火火 (double fire) on top, picturing a tree alight with bright flowers like flames or lanterns. The 1956 reform swapped in 艹 to cut strokes; treat the grass-top as a redesign, not a botanical marker.

Middle 冖 (Kangxi #14) — a horizontal canopy stroke. In the original 榮 picture this was the crown of the tree where the flowers or lanterns were arrayed. The shape suggests something displayed above, ready to be admired. Carries the 'on display' core that gave 荣 its glory and honor senses.

Bottom 木 — the tree. 榮 originally meant a flowering tree in full bloom: a trunk alight with blossoms, the picture of flourishing prosperity. Hence the modern senses: 光荣 glory, 荣誉 honor, 繁荣 thriving. A tree resplendent.
