history
In 1090 Su Shi, then governor of Hangzhou, had the weed-choked lake dredged and the mud piled into a causeway nearly 3 km long, with six bridges. 苏堤春晓 "spring dawn on the Su Causeway" heads the list of the Ten Views of West Lake.
mistakes
The lake's other causeway, 白堤, is named after the Tang poet 白居易, but the dike he actually built in Hangzhou was a different one.
