The suffix
界 (jiè, 'circle / world / sphere') is highly productive: attach it to any field to mean 'the X world / the X community.'
学术界 academic world,
商界 business circles,
体育界 sports world,
政界 political circles. Drop
界 and you're talking about the discipline itself.
