Tips
history
The name comes from the Ketagalan word for a canoe, Báng-kah in Taiwanese Hokkien, after the boats that traded on the river here. It was Taipei's first busy port; under Japanese rule the name was rewritten as 万华, today's 万华区.
usage
舺 is read jiǎ in this name, as in Taiwan, and is used in no other word; some dictionaries give the character the reading xiá.
